Volunteer

How Can I Help?

We are always looking for new volunteers interested in adult literacy. Our volunteers tutor, teach enrichment classes to the inmate volunteers, plan fund raising events, write, advocate for literacy programs, study the issues of illiteracy and especially prison illiteracy, and help organize our annual book drive for the L.I.F.E. students. There is always more we could be doing. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please let us know. Following are tasks in need of new volunteers.

  1. Administrative Tasks – Keyboard ability necessary
    1. Writing & producing public information
    2. Newsletter; Web site.
    3. News clipping
    4. Contact with volunteers
    5. Accounting
  2. Library Development:
    1. Book selection (graded to reading levels)
    2. Develop research sections of libraries
    3. Develop a book donation program
    4. Deliver books to the prisons
  3. Teaching:
    1. Become a reading tutor (training required)
    2. Teach enrichment classes in Literature, Creative Writing, History, Math, Finance
  4. Advocate for Prisoner Education:
    1. Monitor legislation
    2. Write legislation
    3. Research for new legislation
    4. Write letters promoting programs
    5. Speak and write for public awareness
  5. Speakers Bureau:
    1. Speak to community organizations, religious congregations about prison literacy issues
    2. Manage a speakers’ Bureau
  6. Fundraising:
    1. Proposal writing
    2. Donor contact
    3. Make a donation
